Renoir, Monet, Gauguin – Images of a Floating World. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Museum Folkwang, the late Impressionist collection founded by Karl Ernst Osthaus is in dialogue with the collection of Kōjirō Matsukata (National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo). The visual mediation level of the exhibition builds on the Folkwang idea of the cross-cultural dialogue of the arts, the unity of art and life, and Osthaus' conviction and motivation to enable change through culture and culture through change. This "visual" dialogue between the collection of Osthaus and Matsukata is created by the juxtaposition of the respective works on the walls of the individual rooms and enables the visitor to recognise similarities or differences at first glance. In the centre of the exhibition hall is a large, dynamic and exciting yet open space where the contemporary artworks of Shiota and Tabaimo meet the two collections. The use of colour contrasts in the works of the Impressionists as well as the use of bright hues and complementary colours are also the basis for the colour concept. The focal points of contact between the collections are additionally made visually clear by flowing colour gradients between the two colours on the wall. These colours thus symbolise the two collections in the exhibition and are used to visually separate and contrast or dialogue them. A bright yellow is assigned to Matsukata, a pale ultramarine violet stands for the Osthaus Collection. In addition, the tour through the exhibition intuitively guides visitors through intended visual axes to significant moments in the history of the collections.
